Georgia’s Best Kept Secret German Town – HELEN

I am extremely excited to tell you all about our new favorite place, Helen, Georgia! I know what you’re thinking, “Dan really? Georgia? and who is this Helen girl? Well sit down and let me tell you about it.

It was finally time for us to go on a mini “BABECATION”.

It’s that time again. It was finally time for us to go on a mini “babecation”. Teryn and I decided that we would spend some time outside of our house and go exploring so we searched high and low on airbnb with the hopes of just finding a cabin somewhere in the mountains, but sadly all of the cabins near Asheville were already booked or insanely expensive, like $300 to $400+ a night expensive. We thought well maybe we could drive to the coast, but with North Carolina being hella wide that drive would take 5+ hours and besides it was supposed to rain and storm all weekend.

We just really thought that we could get a cabin and then if it storms at least we can just chill in the cabin and read books and edit pictures, of course, I’d find a cabin with a hot tub too. a hot tub is pretty much mandatory for a cabin getaway right?!

After searching all of Airbnb and other websites, I finally just opened up the map and searched by price and bam there it was, a beautiful log cabin that had a beautiful screened porch with a hot tub and even a jacuzzi in the bedroom. Score! “Hey babe, I found us a sweet spot that is only 2 hours away.” “Where is it?” Teryn asked. “Um…uh..somewhere on the other side of the border of here and Georgia and just outside a town called Helen.”

Teryn then googled searched Helen, Georgia. “Babe you have to look at this, you’re gonna love it.” It looked like a tiny Bavaria.

For those that don’t know. Bavaria is the southern region of Germany that is rich in German culture and is home to places such as Munich and many of the famous festivals such as Oktoberfest. Also home to some of the world’s best beer!

Ever since I joined the Army and lived in Germany for 3 years, I’ve been obsessed with Germany, the culture, the food, the beer, everything and I’ve been itching to go back again. When I saw the google images of this place, I told Teryn, “Okay well I’m sold, let’s book it!”

Our Cabin for the weekend.

When in Rome, When in mini Bavaria.

Our goal was simple, we wanted to relax. Naturally, we had to partake in our surroundings and what better way to do that than to enjoy some delicious traditional German beers. We were quite surprised with how big Helen really was.

We half expected to visit this town and it only be like one or two German bars, but they actually have a pretty decently sized strip with numerous bars, shops, chocolate and candy shops. This place is legit , to say the least, complete with a beer garden and German immigrants that have open arms to welcome you to their Bavarian paradise.

Even the cars we saw on the streets were mostly European made, which of course just added to the experience. I really felt like I was back in Germany with the smells and sights.

Just as beautiful at night

We didn’t just drink our way around Helen, we also made our way to Anna Ruby Falls. Not to be confused with Ruby Falls in Tennesee.

This waterfall is very special in that it’s not just one waterfall, but two waterfalls. The hike to see it is paved and can get pretty steep at times, but it is a must see if you are in the area.

Did I mention Helen is home to the longest Oktoberfest celebration in the United States!
That’s right Oktoberfest celebrations begins September 6th through September the 9th, 13th-16th, 20th-23rd and goes from September 27th until October 28th. Full of parades, dancing, music and plenty of traditional food and beer!

Who wants to join us for Oktoberfest?

We can’t wait to go back & join in on the fun.
