Visiting Phuket town? Stop by the Sunday market.

by May 20, 2016Thailand2 comments

I walked out on my balcony and noticed the sun was setting, and immediately, my stomach growled. It’s Sunday, and my favorite market in Phuket happens to be only two streets away.

The walk over is quiet, a sign that the whole town was already where I was headed. As we turned the corner toward Thalong Road, the energy is palpable. The traffic is thick, the good smells are prominent, and people are everywhere.

The Sunday market is in Old Phuket Town, an area undergoing a bit of a Renaissance in the last few years. Old buildings have been restored, and modern bars and restaurants are nestled next to businesses like the Oldest Herb Shop in Phuket and the Muslim fabric store. This end of the market is where you’ll find all of the shopping; anything from purses, clothing and jewelry, to art work, Thai souvenirs, handicrafts of all kinds, and even fresh cut flowers can be found here. As you meander down Thalong road, you’ll soon end up on the food side. Thai food is incredible, and here you can truly eat like a local; walk, buy a small dish, nibble, and repeat.  Steam buns, rice pancakes, fresh seafood, curries, Thai barbeque, kebabs, noodle soups, fresh cut fruit, and desserts…you can engorge yourself for very little money. It’s a beautiful thing. Sit on a bench and watch one of the live musicians while you enjoy your dinner, and wash it down with a Chang.

Thai souvenirs, handicrafts of all kinds, and even fresh cut flowers can be found here.

There is way too much food to post in one blog post, but rest assure that we will be posting all about our Thailand experience of food to include all of the delicious, weird, and insane street food that we have encountered. Check back soon for that post!

One of the main reasons that we love the Sunday market in Phuket town versus all of the other markets in this area is because you can find some truly unique items. There is such an overload of knock off brands at the other markets, it’s easy to see the same thing over and over again. At the Sunday market in Phuket Town, you’ll find some truly one of a kind items. You can even have this young talented artist draw you one of his super detailed designs. (pictured below)
